Osteopathy in the Cranial Field

  • Dr. Venables highly recommends treatment at least every 6 months during the first two years and then at least annually thereafter.

Babies’ cranial bones are often compressed simply from traveling through the birth canal. An osteopath can use gentle cranial osteopathic techniques to let these delicate bones reposition gracefully back to where they function best, to protect the brain and allow the cranial nerves to pass unhindered. The anatomical positioning of the brain, cranial nerves, bones of the head is exquisitely designed, extremely intricate and the treatment is therefore gentle, humble, and specific.

During the first two years of life, we observe the most rapid development in cognition and motor skills. During the first 6 months, the brain doubles in volume. To accommodate the brain’s rapid growth, the calvarium, the part of the skull which protects the brain, rapidly expands as well. By age two, a child’s brain is quadruple the size it was at birth.

With regular check-ups, we can monitor Baby’s progress as her/his cranium grows and takes permanent shape, and, of course, promptly provide any necessary treatments.

  • After two years of age, Dr. Venables recommends annual check-ups, keeping in mind that the skull and facial bones continue to grow and change significantly through age 6-7.
